FootballScoop.com selected the South Carolina defensive coaching staff as one of its Game Changing Coaches from last weekend’s college games.
South Carolina assistant head coach for defense, Ellis Johnson, asked his troops to help the team win the game. His inexperienced and depth depleted defensive group took it a step further. The Gamecock defense flat out won the game, smothering All-ACC quarterback Russell Wilson and the NC State Wolfpack. With youth all over the field, South Carolina applied consistent pressure, while mixing a 3-down package and the base 4-man front. Johnson and defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward were able to do what great coaches do; they got their players to overachieve. South Carolina allowed just 11 first downs, 133 total yards, 59 yards rushing, forced 6 sacks, and forced a critical fumble that led to a South Carolina touchdown. Most importantly, the high effort group played with great mental toughness late in the game with the outcome in doubt. Give credit to the South Carolina defensive staff, their group finished and flat out won the game.
