Crucial Win for Men’s Soccer Last Night

The men’s soccer team battled SMU last night into double overtime, winning on a free kick by Jeff Scannella in the 103rd minute (click here for recap and video with Coach Berson).  The win improves the team’s record to 7-3-2 and 2-0-1 in Conference USA action. But here’s two nuggets about the team I was unaware of until this morning:

  • Men’s soccer now has an RPI of 7 – huge for a potential NCAA Tournament selection.
  • In years past, the winner of the Conference USA Tournament at the end of the regular season received an auto bid to the NCAA Tournament.  That same rule still applies, but this year, only 4 teams make the conference tournament and the top seed hosts.  Finish out of the top four and you’re sitting at home in the postseason. Here’s a look at the current C-USA standings:
Team C-USA Overall
W L T Pts. W L T
UAB 3 0 1 10 9 2 1
Marshall 3 0 0 9 7 4 1
South Carolina 2 0 1 7 7 3 2
Tulsa 2 0 1 7 7 3 2
SMU 1 2 1 4 5 6 1
UCF 1 2 0 3 5 4 2
Kentucky 1 3 0 3 8 5 0
Memphis 1 3 0 3 4 4 2
FIU 0 4 0 0 4 8 0

Two big home games coming up over the next week for the Gamecocks – Kentucky comes to town this Saturday for a 7 p.m. match and No. 5 Wake Forest visits on Tuesday, October 20th at 7 p.m.
