Former South Carolina goalkeeper Brad Guzan was the hero last night as he led Aston Villa to a penalty shootout victory over Sunderland in the Carling Cup on Tuesday night. Guzan saved four penalty kicks in the game (one during the game and three in the shootout) to propel Villa to the quarterfinals of the tournament.
Guzan is currently the backup goalkeeper on Aston Villa behind American Brad Friedel. He is also the U.S. Men’s National Team’s backup goalkeeper behind Tim Howard. His manager Martin O’Neill had this to say about his performance last night:
His was a fabulous, fantastic performance. He’s got everything and he’s as brave as they come. Friedel has been terrific for us but Guzan was immense tonight. I can’t remember the last time a keeper saved four penalties but, by the end, I was almost expecting him to save them.
