Gamecock Golf News: Solheim Cup, U.S. Amateur

  • Gamecock alum Kristy McPherson begins play today in the 11th Solheim Cup as one of 12 LPGA Tour players on the United States team facing a group of pros from Europe at Rich Harvest Farms Golf Club in Sugar Grove, Ill. It is the first appearance in the international event for McPherson, a 2003 South Carolina graduate. The format for Thursday morning’s play is four-ball (best ball), with four matches starting at 9 a.m. Central time. While McPherson is not in the morning lineup, pairings for this afternoon’s foursome (alternate shot) matches have not yet been released. Click here for up-to-date information on the Solheim Cup.
  • Four Gamecocks – three current, one former – will be teeing it up Monday morning in the 2009 U.S. Amateur Championship in Tulsa, Okla. Sophomore Wesley Bryan and seniors Patrick Rada and Paul Woodbury, along with 2008 alum Mark Anderson, will all be competing in the amateur national championship at Southern Hills Country Club, site of the 2001 U.S. Open. Bryan and Anderson are still trying to gain one of the final two spots on the 2009 Walker Cup team, which is the amateur version of the Ryder Cup between the United States and Europe. PGA Championship

Men’s Golf SID Wes Todd tipped me off with this nugget about a former Gamecock playing in the PGA Championship:

Former Gamecock Brett Quigley (‘91) is playing in this week’s PGA Championship. It’s his only major of the season after not qualifying for the Masters or U.S. Open. He earned the final spot in the British Open by finishing second at the John Deere Classic, but turned it down – his passport was at home in Florida and he wouldn’t have been able to fly directly from Silvis, Ill., to Turnberry, Scotland on the John Deere charter.

Quigley, ranked 43rd in this week’s FedExCup standings and 46th on the PGA Tour Official Money List, is paired with Todd Lancaster and Kevin Streelman for the first two rounds at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn.; they began play today at 10:15 a.m. and will tee off at 3:25 p.m. Friday. Follow Quigley and the rest of the PGA Championship field.

As of 2 p.m. today, Quigley was tied for 37th and was +1 through 12 holes.
